This post is sent as a courtesy to birders, not as an "overkill" post about
GGOWs in the area. I encountered some birders today who had responded to
yesterday's message about Great Gray Owls near Newmarket, only to find empty
fields and un-owled trees. Not one of the four birds I'd seen Saturday near
Holland Landing were in view today (at least when I was there). This was a
good thing for individual birds seeking anyonymity, but a disappointment to the
birders trying to find them.

As if turns out, the best owling near Newmarket today was just north of Hwy. 9
on Keele Street where three Great Grays could be seen within the first two kms.
of that road. Many thanks to Wayne King for alerting me to this particular
area. My wife and kids had great looks at this magnificent species. Thanks
also to Terry Osborne for being a good sport.

As always, anyone who does seek these birds out is encouraged to maintain a
respectful distance. A good spotting scope offers excellent views from many
meters away.

Five Gray Partidges are in the same location as yesterday (2:15 P.M. this
afternoon). Interestingly, over a half hour period, they dissappeared for
about 10 minutes, reappeared to eat, then dissappeared again and reapeared
to eat some more. May require patience.

They were located on the north side of Colborne St. W. (old Highway No. 53),
opposite of MacGregor Rd., next to the Bluebird Bus property. They were in
the grass nest to the Bluebird factory fence; one bird was inside the fence
under a bus next to the building. They move around!

This area can be reached by travelling south on Highway 24 (Rest Acres RD.)
from Highway 403. Turn left (east) on Colborne St. at the traffic lights.
Proceed to MacGregor Rd. which runs south from Colborne St. before you reach
Airport Rd. going to the airport.

Cheers,
Ken and Angie Williams

Ontbirds:

Bill Lamond telephoned me this morning saying that there were 5 Gray
Partridge near the Brantford Airport.

My wife and I went out to see them shortly after his call.

They were located on the north side of Colborne St. W. (old Highway No. 53),
opposite of MacGregor Rd., next to the Bluebird Bus property.

This area can be reached by travelling south on Highway 24 (Rest Acres RD.)
from Highway 403. Turn left (east) on Colborne St. at the traffic lights.

Airport Rd. going to the airport.

I believe this is the first sighting of these birds this winter.
