My son and I observed a Great Grey Owl at about 11:15 this morning and again
at 3:15 pm in the same spot. This was a first for both of us! We watched
it from the side of the road in the car for about 5 minutes the first time
but it spooked shortly after we stopped for the second observation. It was
sitting on a fence post close to the road then flew about 200 m back to some
tall red pines. What a beautiful face and an incredible wingspan! A bit
further up the road we saw a flock of Snow Buntings in the field by Vissers
sod farm. We couldn't get more than about 200 m from them and were unsure
if there were any Horned Larks among the flock.

The owl was spotted on Durham Region Road 42 about 200 m south of Concession
5 and about 1km south of Taunton Road. This location is northeast of
Bowmanville and west of Orono. The Snow Buntings were seen in the field on
DRR 42 just south of Taunton Road.

Bettina Murphy

Hi Everyone

Just in case someone is looking for WILD TURKEYS for their winter or 2005
list, my sister tells me there is a very reliable flock of about 40 birds
on Highway 47 just west of Uxbridge, in the field east of the Curb Lane gas
station.

Good Birding
Carol

Birders

We are experiencing a big irruption of northern owls. These owls are
here because of lack of food in the north. Many are starving and
stressed. Please view and photograph owls from a reasonable
distance. Use polite peer pressure with those who approach owls too
closely. Please respect private property when viewing all birds.
Ontbirds is for reporting birds. Please do not criticize others
online. The OFO Code of Ethics is at
http//www.ofo.ca/whoweare.htm#ethics
