Subject: [Ontbirds]Harris' Sparrow, Northern Hawk Owl near Port Hope.
Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 13:28:26 -0500

I saw both the immature Harris' Sparrow and Northern Hawk Owl this morning (Jan 4th) near Welcome which is just north of the 401---Port Hope is the same exit but go south. The Harris' Sparrow is with a mixed flock of sparrows and juncos (including two White-throated Sparrows).
I had to wait for about one hour for the birds to show up.

Directions:

For Harris' Sparrow:
Exit 461 off 401 and go north 1 Km to the flashing red light. Turn left (west) here onto Hwy. 2 and go about 1 Km to Kellogs Road and turn right (north). Go about 3.5 Km past 4th Line and Massey Road until you come to a green gate on your right with a "No Trespassing" sign on it. Park here well off to the side. This is the area where the sparrow is being seen. I initially saw it on the left( west) side of the road. Look for the large flock of sparrows and juncos.

For Northern Hawk Owl:
The Owl was perchd on the hydro wires just west of Kellogs Road on Hwy. 2.

Regards and Happy New Year to all
