I've had a great day birding driving to and from one of my projects. Confirming the Great Gray Owl on Kinburn Side Road and Torbolton Road at noon. At 2PM a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk at Vance's Side Road and Greenland, West Carleton and right outside my house on Klondike Road, Pakenham, another Great Gray Owl. On all 9 individual Great Grays that I have seen since Christmas, all have been about 15 feet off the ground overlooking a bare field. They are mousing for voles under the snow with their ears.

Today, Tuesday January 4, Dave Mudd and I identified three hutchinsii Cackling Geese at the harbour. The first bird was located by Dave because of its call - a single high puppylike "yap" that we subsequently saw and heard these geese giving. Small size (though still bigger than Mallards), short stubby bill, steep forehead and rounded crown were the main features. Two of the birds had a thin incomplete white neckband, broadest at the front, and these two kept together all the time; the third had no white feathers between the black neck and pale breast. They were actively swimming and grazing among an unfortunately huge flock of Canadas but we got excellent close views from the beach when all the geese were on the east side of the harbour. Directions: Exit Hwy.401 at Newcastle, Exit 440, and go south on Mill Street South which takes a bend to the east at the first 4-Way Stop sign. There is a small park with ample parking at the foot of Mill Street on the east side of the harbour mouth. The Port Hope N.Hawk-Owl, Harris's Sparrow, and Harlequin Ducks were all seen again today. Directions as previously posted. The east pier of Cobourg harbour had a good selection of gulls this afternoon, including Glaucous, Iceland, an adult Lesser Black-backed, and a beautiful adult Thayer's.
