Hello Ontbirders
Just home from a good day of birding with Mary Schuster.
We started in Port Hope, where we had no problem finding the NORTHERN HAWK
OWL or the HARLEQUIN DUCKS, as previously posted by Margaret Bain. We
missed the HARRIS'S SPARROW, but I just had a call from Rob Miller who
tells me he and his group are looking at it now (4pm).
At Thickson's Woods we had great looks at 4 GREAT GRAY OWLS, in the meadow
and at the turnaround/parking area on Thickson's Road.
At Pringle Creek we found the SANDHILL CRANE, a NORTHERN PINTAIL, and a
BELTED KINGFISHER.
We tried for the BARRED OWL which we were told was seen today in Lynde
Shores Conservation Area, but the paths in the woods were too icy for us to
walk.
A brief drive down Hall's Road yielded close up views of a light phase
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a NORTHERN SHRIKE. We hear the Barred Owl was seen
here today as well, but we didn't have time to look for it properly.
Directions:
For the Northern Hawk Owl, exit Hwy.401 at Welcome/Port Hope, Exit 461, go
north
about 1km to a flashing light and turn left, west, onto Hwy.2. #3966 is
less than 2 km along here, just west of where Kellogg Road runs north.
For Port Hope harbour Harlequin Ducks, exit from Hwy.401 at Exit 461 as
above but turn
south, keeping south through all the traffic lights onto Victoria Street.
Turn left, east, at the end of Victoria Street then keep right, down Dorset
Street West to John Street where a right turn gets you to the yacht basin
under the railway bridges. The river is just to the east and can be viewed
from both shores.
For the Harris's Sparrow, turn north on Kellogg Road as described above and
go north
for about 3.5 km to the green gate.
Thickson's Woods is found at the foot of Thickson Road in Whitby.
To get to Pringle Creek, exit the 401 at Brock Street and go south to where
a bridge crosses the water. The Sandhill Crane hangs out on west side.
Lynde Shores Conservation Area is on Victoria Street in Whitby, just east
of Hall's Road.
Hall's Road in Whitby runs south off of Victoria Street, just east of
Lakeridge Road. From the 401 exit at Salem Road, go south to
Bailey/Victoria and turn left. Go past Lakeridge Road to Hall's Road.
Happy New Year and good birding

HNC Rare Bird Update - Great Gray Owl still at Dundas Valley
Conservation Area

Rob Dobos and Barb Charlton had the Great Gray Owl at the Dundas Valley
Conservation Area again today at 10:00 a.m.. The bird was in the same
general area as yesterday however there were many people looking who were
not able to locate it. The tip off was mobbing by crows which flushed the
owl out and over their heads. Someone from the conservation authority said
the bird has been in this area for a few days now.
Since it is a large area the suggestion was to park at the end of Lions Club
Road
in Ancaster. Walk into the Merrick Orchard and travel east on the Monarch
Trail . The bird was located on the Monarch Trail at the top of Groundhog
Hill about half way between the Merrick Orchard on the west side and
Maplewood Centre on the East Side. There are trail maps to the Dundas
Valley C.A. at the main trail centre off of Governors Road.
Directions:
From the 403 take Mowhawk/Rousseaux Road into Ancaster. Go past Wilson
Street (#2) and the road becomes Old Dundas Road. Take Old Dundas Road to
Lions Club Road and follow Lions Club Road to the end. Follow directions
above.
Cheers,
Cheryl Edgecombe
