Great views of the young Harris's Sparrow on Kellogg Road north of Port Hope this morning, Monday January 3, around 9.30am. I set up my scope by the southerly gatepost of the green metal gate and after about 10 minutes the Harris's popped up and sat on top of the brushpile for several minutes, giving excellent views. The Whitethroats are still there too. Checked on the hawk-owl as well - it was on the wires on the south side of Hwy.2 about 100 metres west of Kellogg Road at first, but when I came back from seeing the sparrow it was on top of a tree in the farmyard directly south of the junction of Kellogg Road and Hwy.2 (#4161). As I watched, it obviously saw a good meal in the barnyard and plunged down among the farm buildings out of sight. Port Hope harbour was almost completely empty of the usual geese and ducks today and sadly no Harlequins were found.
Directions: Exit Hwy.401 at Welcome/Port Hope, Exit 461, go north about 1km to a flashing light and turn left, west, onto Hwy.2. Kellogg Road runs north about 1km west of this junction. For the Harris's Sparrow, turn north onto Kellogg Road and proceed north, across the 4th Line and Massey Road, for about 3.5 km to the green metal gate on the east side just before Kellogg Road turns west to become Loyalist Road. Please obey the No Trespassing sign on the gate. The sparrows are in the large brushpile east of the gate.
