I had read a number of reports of Great Gray Owls before my visit to a friend's farm near Ivanhoe, (north of Belleville) due east of #62 highway one concession road yesterday (Dec 28). We were hiking in deeps woods north of his farm when we saw what we thought was a Great Gray. It sat for a few minutes in a large hardwood after being disturbed out of thick spruce cover by our approach. Not being certain of identification, I was able to see the Rattray Marsh Great Gray at 3:45 pm this afternoon (Wed 29th) and confirm that what we saw yesterday was indeed a GG. It appears that the irruption is quite widespread and it will be interesting to see where others are observed over the winter.
