Hi all you Christmas Bird Counters, winter listers, and those following the Great Gray Movement in Ontario....
Here's another "invader", almost in the centre of Ottawa, to go along with the many recent reports from the Ottawa area and of course other regions of the province. Just wanted to report, on behalf of Marilyn Ward and Christine Hanrahan (who found this bird yesterday, the 17th) that a Great Gray Owl was in the northeast corner of the ash woodlot at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden. The bird was NOT seen today, but may still be around, as there are bird feeders which also attract mice. Also, a Great Horned Owl has been seen near this location for the past week. The Ottawa-Gatineau CBC will be held tomorrow (Dec. 19). DIRECTIONS: >From Hwy 417, take the Carling Ave. exit and go east on Carling Ave. to Island Park Drive, immediately after Fisher Dr. Turn right (south) on Island Park (which becomes "The Driveway" at this point). Proceed to the traffic circle at the Central Experimental Farm and turn right (south) on Prince of Wales Dr. Look for a large white sign for the Fletcher Wildlife Garden on your left, just before the barn. The trail to the ash woods begins from the 1st parking lot. Walk left after you cross the ravine, then take the right-hand path that leads into the small bush lot.
