OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - NOV 14 2004 AT 8:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

The SUMMER TANAGER 1st discovered at a feeder on 51 Starwood Rd.
was still feeding on the suet on the 14th. The feeders are easily
viewable from the corner of Starwood Rd. and Pender St. Please do
not enter the property.

A Red-throated Loon was at Constance Bay on the 14th. A less than
fortunate report of a Red-throated Loon was of a dead bird in the
ice just off the shore of Shirley's Bay between the boat launch
and the east side of the dyke. A few Red-necked Grebes are still
present along the Ottawa River at Shirley's Bay and east of the
Des Chenes rapids, and a Horned Grebe was at Shirley's Bay on the
14th.

The stars of the waterfowl show in the Ottawa area were a Greater
White-fronted Goose at Constance Bay from Nov. 8th -11th, and
several Cackling Geese. 2 "Cacklers" have been present at Andrew
Haydon Park since at least the 10th; 3 were here on the 14th. An
additional 2 were at the large pond on the east side of Moodie Dr.
south of the Trail Rd. landfill on the 14th. At least 200 Snow
Geese were at this location today. Other waterfowl on this pond
on the 14th included a few late species for Ottawa -- 1 Brant, 1
female Redhead, and 1 female Ruddy Duck. 2 BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were
seen again at Remic Rapids on the 11th.

Raptor reports from this week included Bald Eagles on Nov. 11th
and 14th, Northern Harrier, Northern Goshawk, Rough-legged Hawk
and Peregrine Falcon from various locations.

On Nov. 8th, 24 SANDHILL CRANES were seen in the fields along
Milton Rd. northeast of Carlsbad Springs.

Interesting shorebird reports included 3 Black-bellied Plovers at
Constance Bay from Nov. 8th - 14th, single Greater Yellowlegs at
Shirley's Bay at Andrew Haydon Park on the 7th, and a few late
Dunlin including an flock of approx. 100 flying east down the
river from Constance Bay on the 7th and a single bird at Andrew
Haydon Park on the 11th.

A Thayer's Gull was at Andrew Haydon on the 8th, a Kumlien's
(Iceland) Gull was at the Trail Rd. Landfill on the 13th. Several
reports of Lesser Black-backed Gulls have also come in from the
river as well as the landfill this week.

The RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS in Constance Bay continue to linger,
surprisingly late - at least 3 were still at the old burn site off
Whistler Rd on the 14th. The trail off Kerwin Rd. opposite #881
west of Kanata produced 1 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER on Nov. 8th, and
a female American THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 12th.

Songbird reports included 2 Bohemian Waxwings at Britannia on the
14th and a few Northern Shrikes from various locations. A Fox
Sparrow has been visiting a feeder on West River Rd. in Manotick
for the past 3 weeks. A strong influx of finches was noted in
many areas of Ottawa this week, with good numbers of Pine
Grosbeaks, Common Redpolls and Pine Siskins. White-winged
Crossbills and Evening Grosbeaks have been noted at the Kerwin Rd.
trail and Constance Bay.

Thank you - Good Birding!
