Hi there, Just an addendum to Cheryl Edgecombe's email: The Western Grebe at 50 Pt was critically examined for the possibility of Clarke's. As the bird was relatively close (200-300 ft) and in good light, it was easy to see that the black on the head totally enclosed the eye and the bill had greenish tones. In other words, it was a Western Grebe. It was indeed pretty amazing to have both it and the Pacific Loon visible in my scope at the same time.
The other birders there with me were Lois Evans, John Stirrat and Lynne Terris. Don Graham [EMAIL PROTECTED] Directions to Fifty Point C.A.: Take QEW Niagara to Fifty Road. Head toward the lake and take the North Service Road around to the first road which branches off left (sorry forgot the name). There is a sign here pointing to the Conservation Area. Enter the Fifty Point C.A. (there is a $5.00 charge) and follow signs to the marina or go to viewing points out on the east side of the park. You may also park at the end of Kelson Road and walk down to the beach. The bird has been seen between the marina and the DND property about 150 m out. Be patient, sometimes it disappears. There were varying amounts of high cirrus cloud in place over the course of the day that provided some background against an otherwise blue sky. Winds were moderate to strong and gusty from the west-southwest. Observations: The flight was steady from the mid morning on and most birds were low, many tacking back and forth in the considerable wind. Often birds would circle upward quite high in the distance only to be knocked down again by the time they were overhead, providing us with some excellent views. Of particular note today was a single Cave Swallow that made a fly-by early in the morning. It was not seen again subsequently. =======================================================================Report submitted by Calvin Brennan ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) SMRR- Lake Erie Metropark information may be found at: http://www.smrr.net/
