OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - OCT 31 2004 AT 7:00 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Quite a dynamic week, with numbers and variety of species changing
almost daily.

An adult CATTLE EGRET in non-breeding plumage was seen on a farm
at 371 McCann Rd. near Scotch Corners, southwest of Carleton
Place, between 08:30 and 11:00 AM today, Oct. 31st. The bird
returned at 2:00 PM and was still there at 3:00 PM. Please check
the Rare Bird Alert option (#1) on the Bird Status Line for more
information.

The Ottawa River hosted at least 4 Red-throated Loons this week
and one was still present at Shirley's Bay, easily viewable from
the public boat launch on Oct. 31st. One each of Pied-billed
Grebe, Horned Grebe and Red-necked Grebe were found between
Shirley's Bay and Andrew Haydon Park on the 29th.

Flocks of 14 Snow Geese and 45 Brant were seen on the river at the
east end of Andrew Haydon Park on the 28th, and a single adult
Brant continues to feed on the lawn at the west end of the park as
of the 31st. The Snow Goose count on the large pond on the east
side of Moodie Dr. south of the Trail Rd. Landfill reached 235 on
the 31st, and a juvenile Peregrine Falcon was hunting here on the
28th. An adult male Peregrine was on the R.H.Coats building at
Tunney's Pasture on the 31st.

All 3 species of scoters have been reported over the past week,
the highlights were several large transient flocks of mostly male
birds - 3 flocks of Black Scoters totalling over 750 birds were on
the river off Andrew Haydon Park on the 27th and a flock of
approx. 500 were still present the next day.

The 1st sighting this season of a Barrow's Goldeneye was of a
male, seen from the Remic Rapids Lookout. The bird was on the
river close to the Quebec side, west of Parc Moussette.

25 male Long-tailed Ducks and a few females were seen on the river
on the 28th. 16 Ruddy Ducks were still on the Moodie Dr. pond on
the 31st. 7 Gray Partridge were seen along McFadden Rd. west of
Navan on the 31st, 9 Wild Turkeys were feeding on the west side of
Rifle Rd. on the 29th, and 22 Sandhill Cranes were at the
southwest corner of Milton Rd. and Smith Rd. northeast of Carlsbad
Springs on the 28th and again on the 31st.

It's getting late for shorebirds in Ottawa...a very late Lesser
Yellowlegs was at the base of the Shirley's Bay dyke on the 29th.
3 Greater Yellowlegs were at the west end of Andrew Haydon Park on
the 31st, and 1 Sanderling, 1 White-rumped Sandpiper and 3 Dunlin
were on the sandbar at the east end of Andrew Haydon on the 29th.
12 Black-bellied Plovers and 2 Dunlin were on the river shore at
Constance Bay on the 28th.

Also at Constance Bay on the 28th, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was
still at the old burn site off Whistler Rd.

In songbird reports, 2 Bohemian Waxwings flew over the Shirley's
Bay parking lot on the 27th, 12 Fox Sparrows were found along
Kerwin Rd. west of Kanata on the 26th. A movement of Snow Buntings
seems to have accelerated since the 28th and small numbers of
Purple Finches, Pine Siskins and Evening Grosbeaks have been noted
over the weekend as well.

Thank you - Good Birding!
