Hi Everyone
More variety in gulls along the Ottawa River this evening. I spent an hour
at Shirley's Bay watching 1000's of gulls going to roost on Lake Deschenes.
Most interesting were 1 first winter Thayer's, 1 first winter Glaucous, 3 adult
Lesser Black-back and 250+ Great Black-backed Gulls. A few Red-necked Grebe and
11 White-winged Scoter flew by.
                                                                good birding
                                                                Bruce

Hello Ontbirders

Friday evening, at around 6:15pm, a Hudsonian Godwit (age uncertain) flew low
over Andrew Hayden Park together with two Black-bellied Plovers.

The water level of the Ottawa River has risen considerably today covering much
of the sand spit at the mouth of Graham Creek. However, along the remaining
mudflats, many Dunlin continue to feed with small numbers of White-rumps and
Greater Yellowlegs. There was also a first winter Iceland Gull present.

Many small flocks of diving ducks continue to fly down river, some settling to
rest in Lac des Chenes, Including 80 White-winged Scoter, and a mixed flock of
both scaup, Surf Scoter and Common Goldeneye. Also present were 3 Red-necked
Grebes.

Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 16:00:00
Total observation time: 8 hours

Official Counter: Su Ross-Redmond

Observers: Colin, Tom T.

Visitors:
Jann and Gil Randall from New York (they help with the Ripley Hawkwatch),
Tom and Colin from T.O. and Don T.
Thanks to all of them for helping with the hawkwatch for the day. :)

Weather:
Lots of cloud cover today...kept the temps to a high of just 13. Moderate
NE winds...perfect for raptor flight.

TUV=3 (Fair)

Observations:
Wow!! Another day with 14 out of the typical 15 species counted!! The only
usual suspect not tallied today was Bald Eagle. The hour between 1-2 P.M.
actually saw 10 different species counted! This is why it's so great to
visit Hawk Cliff through October...there's always so much variety in
species during this month as the earlier migrants cross paths with the
later migrants.

Highlights for the day were a very late Broad-winged hawk (undergoing a
serious molt with both wings missing several feathers), 7 Rough-legs (both
light & dark morph), a very fast Peregrine that slowed enough crossing the
willows before heading over the woods to give us a nice look at 1:25P.M.,
then finally at 2:40P.M. what we all had been waiting for, not one but two
Golden Eagles. One an immature and the other a juvenile.
All in all a great day with a total of 677 birds.
