Dear Ontbirders,

This morning, there were about 18 Cackling Geese at Coyote Pond in Markham, presumably the ones found yesterday by Stan Long and reported as Richardson's Geese.

For clarification, in July 2004, the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) split the Canada Goose into two species: the large-bodied ones called Canada Goose (Branta canadensis), and the small-bodied ones called Cackling Goose (Branta hutchinsii). Richardson's Goose is one of the five small subspecies included in the new species called Cackling Goose.

If you haven't yet seen Cackling Goose, now is a great opportunity to see them well and study them in Markham.

Directions: Coyote Pond lies on the north side of Highway 7, 1 km east of the Ninth Line in Markham. There's a big real estate type sign near where you can pull off the road to park on the side.

Best wishes,

Jean
