Hi Everyone
Yesterday, September 30,2004 birded Amherst Island for a few hours in the
afternoon. It was rather quiet but did have a number of shorebirds, 9 species,
at the east end (KFN property) of the island. Most activity was at the gravel
bar with 2 American Golden Plover, 11 B.B.Plover, 8 Semi.Plover, 14 Sanderling,
11 Dunlin and 9 Gr. Yellowlegs. The ponds are still very low and had only 3
Pectoral Sandpiper.
Also made a brief stop at 12 O'clock Point near Carrying Place in PEC and
there were still 5 Great Egrets feeding along the edge of the marsh.

Directions: Located 18 km. west of Kingston. Exit off Hwy. 401 at exit 593
(County Road
4, Camden East) and drive south to the very end (Millhaven). (There is a detour
near the end of CR 4 and you have to travel east on Taylor-Kidd Rd. and follow
detour signs. This adds a few mintues to the drive.) Turn right on Hwy. 33 and
drive 100 metres until you see the sign for the Amherst Island ferry. The ferry
(20 minute trip) leaves the mainland on the half hour and leaves the island on
the hour. Cost is $5.00 Canadian round trip. There are no gas stations on the
island.
The East End K.F.N. property is at the easternmost part of the island.
Enter through the corral which is at the south end of the Lower Forty-Foot
Road. Follow the shoreline until you reach the gravel bar at the northeast
part of the island.

Re: Townsend Lagoons - Sept 30/04
Last night I visited the Townsend lagoons to view the shorebirds. Lots
of activity but the birds were extremely skittish throughout the hour or
so I was there. The reason is two fold - heavy construction in the first
lagoon - sludge removal - and hunters. The latter were actively shooting
from the corn fields immediately behind the back lagoons - successfully
I might add - about 5 less Canada Geese in southern Ontario as we
speak~! The hunters were several hundred meters back from the lagoons so
there shouldn't be any particular safety issues. This made it very hard
to get accurate counts of birds or to try to age them effectively.
Results:
Killdeer - 135
Semi-palmated Plover - 3 [1 adult]
Lesser Golden Plover - 3 juvenile
Black-bellied Plover - 7 - unknown
Lesser Yellowlegs - 75 - mixed ages
Greater Yellowlegs - 3 - unknown
Pectoral Sandpiper - 35-40 - mixed
Least Sandpiper - 25 - mostly juvenile
Semi-palmated Sandpiper - 5 - juvenile
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 - unknown
Water Pipit - 3
Ruddy Duck - 43
Lesser Scaup - 1

Directions: Just as you approach the town of Jarvis you will see a sign
indicating "TOWNSEND" at Nanticoke Creek Parkway #69. Turn right here
and drive to the intersection with the stop signs, turn left on Keith
Richardson Parkway and drive past some park ponds on your right. Drive
ahead until you see a small children's shelter (with an air conditioner
on it) on your right at County Rd 14. This is just before you reach the
abandoned railway line (tracks removed). Turn right here onto County Rd
14. and drive a few hundred yards and you will see a gate and sign
indicating that this is a waste treatment area on your left. Park well
to the side of the road, do not block the gate. If the gate is open
(they are on some weekends) then do not park directly across from the
gate as the larger "Honey Trucks" need the area to swing into and out of
the entrance road.
These lagoons are USUALLY only accessible on the weekend or after 6pm
during the week.
