Everyone, Just for your interest, a Ferruginous Hawk was seen on September 24 at Muskegon State Park in Michigan. This is in the west part of the state about 1/2 way up the shore of Lake Michigan. Almost certainly not the same individual as the Bronte bird, but it does indicate that something is up with the species. Generally a quiet week for bird reports, with most sightings coming from various sites along the Ottawa River, and the large pond on the east side of Moodie Drive south of the Trail Road Landfill. Please note that the Moodie Dr. pond is on private property and viewing may be done from the road. For permission to access the Shirley's Bay causeway, please call the Range Control office at (613) 991-5740 and please adhere to any restrictions given. Highlights were 4 Great Egrets, still very active on the west side of the Shirley's Bay causeway on the 26th and a Long-billed Dowitcher at the Moodie Dr. pond the same day. On the 25th a Cackling Goose was found at the Moodie Dr. pond - this is a tiny relative of Canada Goose, formerly known as Richardson's Goose, but now has full status as a separate species. The Whimbrel at the parking lot at the Remic Rapids Lookout was last reported on the 21st. A flight of Turkey Vultures occurred on the 26th throughout Ottawa, with upward of 30 birds reported, all generally heading south. In recent waterfowl reports, 1000's of Canada Geese were in the Moodie Dr. pond on the 26th along with a few American Wigeon, several Ring-necked Ducks and Hooded Mergansers and at least 30 Ruddy Ducks. Several Gadwall and approx. 40 Lesser Scaup were noted at Shirley's Bay the same day. 5 Snow Geese dropped in to a flooded field along the Carp River near the bridge in Carp on the 20th. A total of 12 species of shorebirds were observed on the weekend, with 11 species at Shirley's Bay including 2 Black-bellied Plovers, 2 Solitary Sandpipers, 5 Least Sandpipers, 9 Pectoral Sandpipers, 2 Dunlin and 10 Wilson's Snipes. Songbird migration in Ottawa is winding down. Only 6 species of common warblers have been reported since the 20th. Winter Wren, Hermit Thrush, and many Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, as well as White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos, were also noted this week. Thank you - Good Birding! - End transcript
