OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE - SEP 08 2004 AT 7:00 PM,

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

September can be a great month for rare birds, and one of the
highlights so far this season was a juvenile SABINE'S GULL,
observed on Sept. 5th at the large pond on the east side of Moodie
Dr. south of the Trail Rd. Landfill.

Six Great Egrets were still present at Shirley's Bay as of the
5th, and over 100 Ruddy Ducks were counted in our area, most of
them at the Alfred sewage lagoons and the Moodie Dr. pond. A flock
of 17 Wild Turkeys, including 15 young, were feeding along Munster
Rd. north of Flewellyn Rd. and 3 Sandhill Cranes were seen in a
hayfield along Russell Rd. north of Anderson Rd. on the same day.

Despite the decreased numbers of shorebirds in Ottawa, there were
still a few birds of interest. A few Baird's Sandpipers (3 at the
Moodie Dr. pond on the 4th and 1 on March Valley Rd. on the 5th),
and 1 White-rumped Sandpiper was still at Shirley's Bay on the 5th
as well. On the 4th, single American Golden Plovers were noted
near Alfred and the Moodie Dr. pond.

Several Lesser Black-backed Gulls were reported from assorted
locations on the 4th and 5th, mainly the Ottawa River, the Moodie
Dr. pond and the parking lot at the Corel Centre.

Owling efforts on the early morning of the 5th yielded 9 Great
Horned and 2 Barred Owls, and 2 Eastern Screech Owls were heard
calling before dawn in Forest Park near Embrun on the 6th.

In local songbird news, 4 species of Vireos including Blue-headed
and Philadelphia and 11 species of warblers were reported. A
Northern Mockingbird was heard in the Munster area along Kettles
Rd. on the morning of the 5th.

Thank you - Good Birding!
