Just returned from tour to eastern Canada, ostensibly for
whalewatching, but found many shorebirds throughout. At Les Escoumins
on Aug. 7th, eight juvenile Least Sandpipers were photographed. Of
hundreds of Black-bellied Plovers seen along the St. Lawrence and on
Grand Manan Aug. 7-13, approximately 5 % were juveniles. At St.
Andrews, NB, 3 juvenile and one adult Semipalmated Plover; on Grand
Manan about 35 Semip. Plovers: all adults. Of 30 Ruddy Turnstones seen
on St. Lawrence, all were adults.
At St. Anne de Portneuf, Peregrine and Golden Eagle seen. On
river, 2 Black Guillemots, 6 Razorbills, immature Gannet, many
Bonapartes and Kittiwakes, one Little Gull, all 3 scoters, numerous
Common Eiders.
In Bay of Fundy at least 600 Greater Shearwaters, 5 Sooty; 3
Leach's & 25 Wilson's Storm Petrels, 7 Razorbills, 50 Common Murres,
1 Puffin, 30 Black Guillemots, 8 Common Loons, 19 Red-necked
Phalaropes, 30 Common Terns, many Kittiwakes.
Great views on tour of Blue, Fin, Humpback, Beluga, Minke whales,
White-sided Dolphin, Harbour Porpoise, Gray & Harbour seals.

A mild north wind and high thermal updraft velocity may have contributed to
the wonderful sight of 4 small kettles of Broad-winged Hawks between 8 and
9AM EST on Aug. 15 at Cranberry Marsh. Also 3 low-flying Ospreys came
through. If this should continue I may elect to make this date an official
opener for the 2004 migration season. Otherwise----?
Other birds in the area-- Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Least Flycatcher, Great
Egret, Black-crowned Night Heron, several Great Blue Herons, Virginia Rail,
many Robins and Kingbirds, Baltimore Oriole, Hummingird, ----
Frome the west-- 401 to Salem Rd., south to Bayly, east through LakeRidge
Rd. in southwest Whitby, turning south at the first street thereafter at
Hall's Rd., right down to the second parking lot near the lakefront-- walk
east to the marshside platform.
