Hi all!
I went to check on these birds this morning and to my dismay found that the nest tire has tipped. I could not see any floating eggs or vegetation, though some was still clinging to the tire. Two grebes nearby did a bit of displaying and then swam over to the clean tire to the east. One(female?) climbed up unto it and assumed a head down - tail up position on the tire. The second one swam around it and poked his(?) head over the edge - it seemed that they were checking it out as a possible re-nesting location. I returned about 90 minutes later and they were both floating around with their heads tucked in. Both times, there were another two grebes on the far side of the dock - not doing much of anything, either time. I would hazard a guess that the water rose with all this rain we've been having and there was not enough slack in the anchoring chain/rope, which caused the tire to tip over - I hope these lovely birds have better luck if they re-nest. Cheers ! Maris
