I saw a Willet land towards the back of the left hand cell about as far
from the road (Eastport drive) as it could get. The time was 8:30 pm, a
torrential downpour ensued as we were throwing up a scope resulting in no
one else from our party seeing the bird. Our unofficial total for the day
our Baillie Birdathon supporting the Ontario Field Ornithologists was 137.
Highlights included Red-headed Woodpecker at the dayuse parking area of
Long Point Provincial Park, Sandhill Cranes in Big Creeek Marsh, Prairie
Warbler at E1/4 Line and Conc 6 and Wilson's Phalarope at Jarvis Sewage
Lagoons.

Willet Directions from Toronto:

Take QEW to QEW Niagara. At the exit to QEW Niagara you will see a sign for
Eastport Drive. Get onto Eastport Drive and it will wind its way around and
over the Burlington Lift Bridge. Continue to follow Eastport Drive past the
first Tollgate Pond (large square pond on right) and just east of this there
will be a muddy area where they are filling in the pond that was there. I was
seeing the bird up against the berm of rubble at the back of the pond
(parallel to the road).

I birded the woods adjacent to Rattray marsh this morning between 9:30
and 11:30 am. Likely the approaching weather system pushed the migrants in
a massive wave and concentrated them in the woods which were literally
treaming with thousands of passerines, mainly Red-eyed and Warbler Vireos (a
few Yellow-throated and White-eyed); flycatchers (mainly Leasts but one
Olive-sided); and 20 species of Warblers including 2 Golden-winged, 1
Blue-winged and a female Hooded. A male Summer Tanager in late eclipse
plumage was also found and a Least Bittern was heard from the peninsula
boardwalk lookout. The main areas of concentration were located along the
walkway south of Bexhill Road to the Marsh, the adjacent boardwalk to the
lake, and the secondary trail that leads up the hill about 100 yds. nw of
the watertower and near the termus of Boardwalk trail that surrounds the
'knoll'.
Rattay Marsh can be best most easily be accessed from the south end
Bexhill Road off Lakeshore Boulevard about 0.5 km west of Erin Mills Parkway
(just east of Clarkson). Wayne Renaud.
