Rondeau Daily Report May17/04

Not too many migrants around today but a few pockets of warblers, etc. could be
found and in total 19 species of warbler were reported. These included a
Connecticut, Hooded and Mourning along the South Pt. Trail. Thrushes were
again reasonably easy to find and Veery, Swainson’s, Wood and Grey-cheeked
were all present, the latter was even singing in places.

Sparrows were well represented with just a couple of White-throated and White-
crowned joining the resident Song, Field, Swamp and Chipping. Special migrants
noted were a Lincoln’s on the South Pt Trail and both Grasshopper and Le
Conte’s along the Marsh Trail.

Also along the Marsh Trail today were numerous Marsh Wren, up to 10 singing
Sedge Wren, a Yellow-breasted Chat, Tufted Titmouse, and White-eyed Vireo.

A few shore birds were in evidence today on South Beach with 1 each of a Semi-
palmated and White-rumped Sandpiper joining several Dunlin and 8 Whimbrel.
(the latter actually arrived yesterday evening). A Peregrine was also present
keeping things lively.

The Friends of Rondeau are sponsoring two guided hikes daily until May 23rd.

This morning (Monday) at 7:30am the Piping Plover was at Second Marsh
looking west from the east platform. It was about half way across the marsh
on the mudflat associating with Semipalmated Plovers. Lots of Least
Sandpipers and few Dunlin, Black-bellied Plovers and 2 American Golden
Plovers in breeding plumage. Had my FOTS Willow Flycatcher calling from the
tree beside the platform. The Great Egret was also there. Second Marsh is
very low. Lots of good shorebird habitat. You will need a scope.
