Rondeau Daily Report May15/04

It was a day of contrasts at the park today. Vast stretches of the trails
would be nearly devoid of birds and then one would come across a pocket of
activity, which provided great birding for those lucky enough to find them.
By 4pm today there have been 29 species of warblers reported in the park (I’m
still hoping for a late Palm to make it 30). Highlights include a Connecticut
Warbler on Harrison Road, male Cerulean on Spicebush and a female on South Pt.
Trail. The two Yellow-throated Warblers were still to be found in pines at the
south end of the park on the South Pt. Trail. They were last seen at 2:45pm
but remain quiet and are hard to locate. A Yellow-breasted Chat was reported
from the same area. Kentucky Warblers were seen/heard at no fewer than three
spots today. The Spicebush, Tulip Tree and South Point Trails all had one.
Blacburnian may have been the most common migrant warbler today.

Other birds of interest include an Olive-sided Flycatcher and a Dickcissel on
South Point this morning and an Acadian Flycatcher along Harrison Road.

The Friends of Rondeau are sponsoring two guided hikes daily until May 23rd.

After better views with a scope at 3:30 this afternoon, the Piping Plover at
Tollgate Ponds appears to be a female Wilson's Plover instead. Aplogies if
this has been an inconvenience to anyone. I will post any of my pictures
later if they are any good.
