Within minutes this morning the London hot line received two hot line calls.
Just before 11:00 a.m., Bill and Colleen Lindley reported a single breeding plumage Red-throated Loon at the north end of Fanshawe Lake. This species is rarely seen in Middlesex County with perhaps 1 to 3 reports of mostly single birds per year. Fanshawe Lake is located in northeast London. From the intersection of Clarke Road and Huron Street drive north on Clarke Road to Sunningdale Road. Turn east (right) and drive to where Sunningdale dead ends overlooking the north end of the lake.
Just after 11:00 a.m., Tom Bolohan phoned from a construction site in northwest London to say that he had just seen 9 "dark" ibises flying to the south towards the Komoka area. There are plenty of ponds and flooded fields south and west of London so no one knows where these birds might end up. Ontbirders might recall that 6 Glossy Ibis spend a few days southwest of London near Melbourne two years ago in a flooded field. A Snowy Egret and an Avocet were also reported from that field during the time that many birders came to see the Ibis.
