Rondeau Report May3/04
Cool N winds shifting to SW today kept birds generally quite. Best bird of the day was a Kentucky Warbler along Spicebush Trail. This may well be the same bird seen sporadically here since Friday. Rondeau Bay and Marsh produced some interesting birds with Lesser Yellowlegs, Green-winged Teal, American Widgeon, and Gadwall being easily seen. Requiring more luck were the two Sandhill Cranes that flew over the Marsh Trail. The Cranes may well be nesting but rarely show themselves. Eastern Peewee was heard along Lakeshore Drive for a first sighting of the year. The Friends of Rondeau are sponsoring two guided hikes daily until May 23rd. At least 18 species of warblers were present including 2 different male Hooded Warblers, both singing and providing excellent views. One or more male Blue-winged Warblers were quite conspicuous while the Golden-winged male, a new arrival today, was seen fairly regularly but not for long in any one location. Many of the birds were in the small valley near the sightings book but small groups of warblers were roaming throughout the woods. One 'advantage' of the cool windy weather was that considerable numbers of birds were foraging low in the trees and shrubs. This allowed close looks at species such as Tennessee Warbler that are often only seen from below. The Summer Tanager was frequenting the pines south of the sightings box and a male Scarlet Tanager was in the same general area. Other interesting birds in addition to those mentioned by Dennis and Doug in their earlier posts included good numbers of both Blue-headed and Warbling Vireos, Least and Great-crested Flycatchers, an Orchard Oriole [immature male] and Baltimore Orioles, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and Cooper's Hawk. Thickson's Woods , Whitby can be reached by travelling south on Thickson's Road from Hwy 401. Proceed south to a private road on your left before Lake Ontario. Access to the woods is South from this road. Good birding Jerry Walsh Scarborough ON
