Just to let everybody know that after 4 days, the Hooded Warbler has moved on. We had about 150 birders in our backyard in 2 days with a 100% success rate. Thank you for your visit. Today, Kim Lendvay and I decided to try a little atlassing and birding at Port Perry and Nonquon sewage lagoons. Atlassing was a little slow, but the lagoons were good. Hundreds of ducks including Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal, Gadwall, Mallard, Shovelers, Ring-necked Ducks, Ruddy Ducks, Bufflehead, and both Scaup, were abundant. Joining them were several Bonaparte's Gulls, one Caspian Tern, Rough-winged Swallow and Tree Swallows. One Lapland Longspur flew over. Several Turkeys were found just north of there as well. Shorebirds were limited but included 28 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, one Spotted Sandpiper, and two Killdeer. This said, the habitat in the 2nd and 3rd lagoons from the west is excellent and should produce birds over the next few days and weeks. Directions: To obtain a permit, you must go in person [no proxies] to the Port Perry Waste Transfer Station, located at 1623 Reach Road, Port Perry. Go north of town on Hwy 12, to Regional Rd 8 [= Reach Road] and turn right [east] to the Transfer Station [on your left]. Stop at the gatehouse and you can buy your permit [$5.00] from Tuesday to Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. only. 905-985-7973. To reach the lagoons from here, back track to Hwy 12 and go north to the next street Concession 8 [don't be confused by the similarity in the names - it is a different road than Regional Road 8] and go east and follow it over a bridge and past a chain link fence to the second gate.
