Around noon today, I spotted a Black Vulture flying east across Hwy 6, just south of Lynn Valley Road; this is approximately 7 km northeast of Port Dover and ~50 km southwest of Hamilton. It was flying steadily to the east, and was lost from sight behind a row of trees after only a couple of minutes.
Several hours later, a pair of Redheads was observed south of Ottawa along with 8 Common Mergansers and 2 Ring-necked Ducks at the pond on the south side of Earl Armstrong Road east of Bowesville. Further west on Earl Armstrong, midway between Limebank and Bowesville, there was a Loggerhead Shrike flitting from post to post along the road. Also in the area were 3 Northern Harriers, but no Short-eared Owls were seen. Note that both sides of the road are private property; please stay on the road if looking for this bird. Directions to the area are at http://www.ofnc.ca/birding.htm under the 'airport' heading. Yesterday at Long Point Provincial Park, early migrants included 3 Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers (along the main park road), 2 Pine Warblers (at the park entrance), 1 female Black-throated Green Warbler and 1 male Eastern Towhee (campground). Sapsuckers and flickers were abundant throughout; White-throated Sparrow and Yellow-rumped Warbler numbers are slowly beginning to build. Good birding!
