It was sunny, but cool (-10C) and windy this morning at Thickson's Woods (Thickson Road, south from Hwy. 401 East in Whitby). The Woods were very quiet at first, except for a few of the usual suspects: House Finch, Black-capped Chickadee, Grackle, Mallard, Mourning Dove, American Crow.
Between 10:30 and 11:00AM,however, a female Pileated Woodpecker began calling loudly and actively feeding (just above ground level) on a number of dead trees. Close to the location of visitors' book, a Great Horned Owl was mostly asleep in the crown of one of the nearby tall pines. Even the whine of a neighbour's chain saw did not seem to bother it.The ground below an adjacent pine was splattered with owl pellets (bones, hair) and an unlucky rabbit's foot.
