Hi All, Headed out to Almonte to look for the Northern Hawk Owl, reported by Bruce DiLabio on Wednesday, and found it in the tall trees to the left of the farm buildings at 840 Clayton Rd. (see directions below), it was not sitting atop the trees but further down and was not easy to see except from certain angles, the tree branches hid it well! It may have been lower down because of the number of American Crows flying around.
Along Cty Rd 14 (between Perth & Hwy 15), at the border of Lanark & Leeds-Grenville Counties, at the locks on Upper Rideau Lake there was a tiny amount of open water with 6 Trumpeter Swans (untagged), a couple were immatures. On the way towards Amherst Island we had an adult Bald Eagle circling over Little Cataraqui Creek in Kingston, along the 401, around km 621. On Amherst Island there were 2 Snowy Owls, 1 immature bird on the Kingston Field Naturalists property at the east end of the island (flying from one tree to another), also had an adult pure white Snowy along Front Road east of the town of Stella (about 1km east, on the south side), also on the island were 2 Rough-legged Hawks and a count of 44 White-tailed Deer. Along the south shore, some ice was breaking up and in the open water were many Common Goldeneye, Common Mergansers, a few Red-breasted Mergs, 1 White-winged Scoter and a few Long-tailed Ducks, also there were 3 Mute Swans, 2 adults with an immature bird. Incidentally, spring is here, I had my first Ground Hog of the year along Hwy 7 just north of the town of Perth. Regards & good birding, Frank Pinilla Thornhill, ON DIRECTIONS: N. After passing Almonte Sewage Lagoon on your right (an earlier location of a hawk-owl) turn right on Ramsay Con.8. Follow to Camelon Road and turn left. Follow Camelon to Ramsay Con.7B and then north on Con. 7B to Clayton Road. Turn left and follow road west to #840. On arriving at the island travel around the roads. My route took me on an immediate left, in the town of Stella, along Front Rd to the east end of the island where the road turns south on Lower 40ft Rd, to the east of this is the KFN Property, I also drove along the South Shore Rd.
