I located a winter adult Red-throated Loon in the Welland Canal an hour ago while making one final look for the Tufted Duck. The loon was feeding and resting in the water very close to the edge of the east pier, and south of the small moored pilot boats. The bird is best viewed from the west pier (Government Road AKA Bunting Road). While there were a good number of male scaup in the canal, regretfully there has been no sign of the Tufted Duck since the early morning of February 6. This bird has clearly moved on.
Directions: QEW to Niagara Street exit of St. Catharines, go north to the T junction of Lakeshore Road, turn right and drive to Lock 1 (do not cross), turn left and look for the loon in the canal about two thirds of the way to the moored pilot boats.
