The male Tufted Duck was seen all morning today (Thursday, February 5th) behind Lock 1 of the Welland Canal at Port Weller, St. Catharines. Alan Smith, Don Campbell, Maggie Smiley and I saw the bird between 1045 and 1100h, and Gordon Bellerby saw the bird there just after lunch. It was associating with scaup and a male Redhead.
Brian Ahara called me at 1645h to say that he looked for the TUDU from 1500h to 1630h, and could NOT find it in that hour and a half. Two birders from Flint Michigan spent a number of hours looking for the bird but were not successful. The canal is presently ice free, and some Buffalo birders told me they saw a raft of Greater Scaup in Lake Ontario at the eastern entrance to the canal just off the Coast Guard property. Perhaps this TUDU joins the group of scaup for the night and returns each morning to the lock area to feed. We will check tomorrow morning and let birders know through ONTBIRDS if the bird has returned. Kayo Kayo Roy 13 Kinsman Court Fonthill, ON.
