THE OTTAWA FIELD-NATURALISTS' CLUB BIRD STATUS LINE

At 7:30 PM on Sunday February 1st, 2004. This is Chris Lewis
reporting.

Another cold week, but with several highlights in bird reports.
Ventures to the Quebec side on Feb. 1st were very productive. A
male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen on the Ottawa River from Parc
Brebeuf, and 2 adult Bald Eagles were seen flying over Eardley-
Masham Rd. and Steel Rd. From the Lac Lablanche area north of
Buckingham there were 2 Northern Goshawks and male BLACK-BACKED
WOODPECKER - the woodpecker was along Inlet Rd. south of Rue
Achtell. A group of 11 Cedar Waxwings were seen along the lower
Aylmer Rd. near Vanier Rd. Both Pine and Evening Grosbeaks were in
the Lac Lablanche area as well on the 1st.

Back in Ontario, a male Wood Duck was still on the Rideau River
near the Tennis Club today. A Merlin was at Timm and Eagleson Rds.
in Kanata on the 31st and a Peregrine Falcon was plucking a pigeon
on the west side of the RH Coats building on Feb. 1st. Cooper's
Hawks were reported from 2nd Ave. at O'Connor St. on Jan. 24th,
and from Greenbank Rd. near the police station on the 30th.

Five GRAY PARTRIDGES were seen at a farm on the corner of Frank
Kenny and Regimbald Rds. on Feb. 1st and 4 Ruffed Grouse were at
Shirley's Bay near the Hilda Rd. feeder on the 25th. Small
numbers of Wild Turkeys were seen on Berry Side Rd. and 5th Line
Rd. and also on March Valley Rd. at the feeders near Riddell Rd.,
both on the 31st.

The pair of Great Horned Owls are still in the pines of the
Britannia woods as of Feb. 1st. A Snowy Owl was on the north side
of Brownlee Rd. west of Eagleson Rd. on the 29th, and at least 4
Short-eared Owls can still be seen flying at dusk along Earl
Armstrong Rd.

An incredible winter survivor is a Wilson's Snipe, discovered on
January 29th in the drainage ditches along the north-south
service road between the National Research Council campus and the
CSIS building south of Montreal Rd. and west of Blair Rd. It was
seen again here on Feb. 1st, feeding and looking quite healthy.

Bohemian Waxwings are being reported in increasing numbers. Two
flocks totalling perhaps 250 birds were seen in the Shirley's Bay
area on the 31st. An American Robin briefly visited Lyttleton
Gardens in Rockcliffe on the 30th.

Unusually large numbers of Lapland Longspurs were noted both east
and west of Ottawa last week. At least 28 were at Frank Kenny and
Regimbald Rds. on the 29th and up to 15 on Rushmore Rd. between
Eagleson and Moodie Dr. on the 31st. Fair numbers of Snow
Buntings and increasing numbers of Horned Larks were reported from
these areas as well. A single female HOARY REDPOLL is still
coming to the feeder on Hilda Rd. near Shirley's Bay.

Thank you - Good Birding!
