West Humber Naturalists' group enjoyed a great winter's day birding in the Hamilton and Port Credit areas.
Our first stop at McGillvray in Vaughan produced Snow Buntings and Horned Larks.
Both Harlequin Ducks and Red-necked Grebe were seen off the Port Credit harbour. Two to three Ist-year male King Eiders were viewed off Sayers Park along with Surf and White-winged Scoters and a 1st-year Glaucous Gull.
At the Hendrie Valley Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Brown Thrasher, Catbird, Fox, White-throated and Song sparrows,and Cedar Waxwings were seen well.
On the Desjardins Canal were Pied-billed Grebe, Wood Duck, Hooded Merganser, Kingfisher,Tundra and Trumpeter swans and Am. Coot. A recently deceased Trumpeter and DC Cormorant were found.
At Windermere were many Ruddy Ducks, N Shoveler, N Pintail, and DC Cormorants.
Directions: McGillvray is n. of Rutherford, east of #50. Port Credit Harbour is at the foot of Stavebank, west of Hurontario off QEW. Sayers Pk. is off Drakes n. off the N Service Rd. accessed at Centennial Parkway in Stoney Creek. Hendrie Valley is found at Valley Inn: take Plains Rd. off QEW to left turn to Woodland Cemetery. Drive through cemetery to Valley Inn parking area at foot of the hill. Walk valley from there.Desjardins Canal is off York in Dundas near Dundas Marsh. Windermere is on Eastport close to Burlington Skyway. Take Pier #25 road to view the area.
