I was in the Kingston area this weekend and dropped by Amherst Island on Sunday morning, January 4th. I did a counter-clockwise route heading south from Stella then around the eastern tip and back to the ferry terminal. All told, I saw a total of 25 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS, and 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS. At the eastern tip, there were 2 SNOWY OWLS. A quick tour of the pine forest in Owl Woods turned up 4 LONG-EARED OWLS and one NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL (though others I met indicated that there were 2 more Saw-whets amongst the cedars). The more common waterfowl were BUFFLEHEADS and COMMON MERGANSERS.
Directions to Amherst Island: Exit Hwy 401 at exit # 599 and drive south on County Rd 4 to Hwy 33 at Millhaven. Turn right and drive a very short distance to the ferry dock. The ferry runs leaves on the half hour, returning on the hour. (Fee $5.00 per vehicle).
