Hi Birders, I surveyed the St. Clair River from Port Lambton to Sarnia this morning. Of note in Sarnia Bay were 7 AM. COOTS, and a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (been there at least two weeks). In the harbour was a blue-phase SNOW GOOSE (been there a while) with Canada Geese. The St. Clair River has been quite devoid of waterfowl this winter. In fact, I cannot remember seeing so few ducks for this time of year. (They must be on Lake St. Clair, as we found out yesterday on the St. Clair CBC). >From Port Lambton to south Sarnia I noted 13 Mute Swans (Sombra), 1 Black Duck, 88 Mallard, 1 Canvasback, 1 Greater Scaup, 15 Lesser Scaup, 54 Bufflehead, 88 Common Goldeneye, 6 Hooded Mergansers, 80 Common Mergansers, and 4 Red-breasted Mergansers. Additionally, a mixture of the above were around Sarnia. Could not find any Harlequin ducks today at Point Edward.
_Directions to Sombra and St. Clair River: Find Hwy 40 which runs N/S between Sarnia and Wallaceburg. Turn west on Lambton Rd. 2 (Bentpath Line) and take to Sombra on the river. Sombra Bay is right in front of you. Fawn Island is just to the south of the village. The St. Clair Parkway (Rd. 33) follows the river along its length. _______________________________ Blake A.
