To contact the Science Museum, call 896-5200. Highlights of reports received December 27 through January 2 from the Niagara Frontier Region include ROSS'S GOOSE, GR. WHITE-FR. GOOSE, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and WILLET. December 27, a white phase, adult ROSS'S GOOSE was found at Cayuga Pool, along Route 77 in the Iroquois Refuge. January 1, the ROSS'S GOOSE was still present, along with a GR. WHITE-FR. GOOSE, plus a blue phase SNOW GOOSE, 11 TUNDRA SWANS, BALD EAGLE and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. Also in the Iroquois area, at Mallard Overlook on Sour Springs Road, a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and 2 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, and on Casey Road a MERLIN. The WILLET at the Bird Island Pier in Buffalo was reported again on January 1. It has been residing at the south end of the pier at the end of the railing. In Buffalo, December 31, two PEREGRINE FALCONS were reported on the Liberty Building; likely the same pair that have nested on the Statler Building. On the Niagara River, a BLACK-HEADED GULL flew past Niagara- on-the-Lake on the evening of December 27. Highlights from several of the Christmas Bird Counts during the past week - From the Four Mile Creek State Park area of the Niagara Falls count, an excellent total of 68 species included 15 RED-THROATED LOONS, 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, 3 SURF SCOTERS, 19 WILD TURKEYS, LONG-EARED OWL, 5 GREAT HORNED OWLS, 2 EASTERN SCREECH-OWLS, WINTER WREN, a very good count of 7 HERMIT THRUSHES, 7 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 2 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 2 YELLOW-R. WARBLERS, 3 SWAMP SPARROWS, 23 WHITE- CR. SPARROWS, 60 SNOW BUNTINGS, 1 RED CROSSBILL and 115 COMMON REDPOLLS. And, at sunset in the fields on the east side of Dickersonville Road, between Lake and Youngstown Roads in Porter, a great sight of 23 NORTHERN HARRIERS and over 15 SHORT-EARED OWLS. The Wilson and Lake Ontario Plains count reported a NOR. SAW-WHET OWL calling before dawn at Wilson-Tuscaurora State Park. On Lake Ontario, 1675 SCAUP, 3 SURF SCOTERS, 61 WHITE- WINGED SCOTERS and 9 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, plus 12 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS and a total of 9 NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRDS in two count sections. And on the Oak Orchard count in the Alabama Swamps, one section reported 3 BALD EAGLES, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, BELTED KINGFISHER, 8 RED-BELLIED WDPKRS., 6 HAIRY WOODPECKERS, 3 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, 3 NORTHERN SHRIKES, 3 BROWN CREEPERS and CAROLINA WREN. Other reports this week - COMMON REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS at several feeders in the region. In Amherst State Park, GREAT BLUE HERON, NORTHERN FLICKER, CAROLINA WREN and SONG SPARROW. And at Tifft Nature Preserve in Buffalo, ROUGH- LEGGED HAWK, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD and AMER. TREE SPARROW. Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, January 8.
