Black-headed Grosbeak Directions: From Ottawa take Hwy. 417 west towards Arnprior and exit at March Rd.(#155). Turn left and follow road to Almonte. Go through the town and turn right onto County Road 29. Follow road 10 km towards Pakenham and then turn left on Cedar Hill Side Road and travel 4.3 km until you reach a " T" intersection. Turn right and follow 6th Con. Pakenham which turns into Bellamy Road for 2.2km. The house is at 339 Bellamy Road. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rufous Hummingbird Directions: from Hwy 401 @ km. 623 go south on Hwy 15 to the T-junction at Hwy 2 and then east on #2 Hwy to King Pitt Rd., then south on King Pitt Rd.to #24 at the end of the Road. CONDITIONS: The owners are birder-friendly. They request that visiting birders not block the streets or driveways. Please visit in small groups, 5 or 6 persons at a time are welcome to watch the hummingbird feeder on the south side of the house from a distance of 20 ft. A good vantage point is the row of rocks at about that distance south of the feeder. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Ontario birdwachers: We saw both the 1st year male Black-headed Grosbeak [ many views at the feeder at #339 Bellamy Road & in company with EGs, between 10:50 am and 12:10 pm )and the Rufous Hummingbird ( at 4 pm, Kingston) on Saturday. The BH Grosbeak, when flying or being gregarious with Evening Grosbeaks, can be spotted by its smaller size, heavily spotted head and dark auricular patches (unlike females EGs)... also it has 'Salmon pink' flanks and yellowy abdominal patch; in flight, it is not only smaller but shows more rounded white patches in primaries 'windows'( not in the secondaries speculum as with EGs). It "appeared" yellowish under the wing coverts. Thus, a very good ID. Thanks to Bruce Di Labio & R. Sachs(for keeping up the updates); and thanks to the kind tolerant owners of these two properties.
