Ron Weir sent the following Kingston C.B.C. final results: The information to be entered into the database for the 2003 Christmas Count for Kingston, ON, has now been received from all sources. The total count settled out at 102 species and 45 of us were in the field for the day 14 Dec 03 together with about 25 feeder watchers. In my view, this is an excellent showing, especially so given the handicap of the heavy snow that started late morning and continued for the rest of the day. Two additional species were found during the Count Week that are reported officially, but are excluded from the 102 species on the day. They are Barrow's Goldeneye (ad male off Wolfe I.,) and the Belted Kingfisher seen along the north shore of Wolfe I. for the two days previous to 14 Dec 03. The feeder watchers provided some of the species missed by the field observers.
The single Snowy Owl on Simcoe Island constitutes the 52nd consecutive year we have found this species. Record high counts (since 1948) are the 754 Redheads, 558 Red-breasted Mergansers, 68 Wild Turkeys, 1032 Black-capped Chickadees, 134 Dark-eyed Juncos, and 86 Cardinals. I would like to thank each of you for your help. We are fortunate in Kingston to have the combination of varied habitat conducive to high species totals and a group of hard working birders who shake every bush. The totals we are often able to realise equal the results from Christmas Counts held in areas several hundred km to our south.
