Highlights of reports received December 4 through December
11 from the Niagara Frontier Region include TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRE, MEW GULL, NORTHERN GANNETS, BLACK-HEADED GULLS,
  CALIFORNIA GULLS and WILLET.

The Niagara River hosted several outstanding rare birds this
week. December 6 and 7, a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was found on
Grand Island along the West River Parkway between Bedell and
Sunset Roads. It has not been seen since the 7th, but it is
possible that the bird is still in the area.

December 6 at Niagara Falls, Ontario, an adult MEW GULL was
on the breakwall downstream of the control gates. Also at
the gates, an immature NORTHERN GANNET has been present
December 6 through at least the 10th. And on the 10th, 4 GR.
WHITE-FR. GEESE were above the falls near the stranded
  barge.

On the lower river, a second NORTHERN GANNET was seen at the
Whirlpool on December 6 and two BLACK-HEADED GULLS, one at
the Whirlpool and another upriver from the Queenston boat
launch, by the waterfall at Artpark. And, at the Adam Beck
  overlook, two CALIFORNIA GULLS.

Other gulls of note on the river were LITTLE GULL, THAYER'S
GULL, ICELAND GULL, L. BLACK-B. GULL and GLAUCOUS GULL, plus
the four common gulls, BONAPARTE'S GULL, RING-BILLED GULL,
HERRING GULL and GREAT BLACK-B. GULL, for a total of 12 gull
  species this week.

December 9, up at the source of the river in Buffalo, a
record late WILLET was still present along the Bird Island
Pier. The WILLET has been seen on both sides of the pier at
the end of the railing. It may be possible to see the bird
when it is on the canal side, from the north end of LaSalle
Park in Buffalo. Also at the pier, a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and
a distant PURPLE SANDPIPER at Donnelly's Pier.

Other reports this week - At Buckhorn Island State Park on
Grand Island, the highlight was the sight of a BELTED
KINGFISHER successfully evading a PEREGRINE FALCON, plus
  RING-NECKED DUCK, 10 AMERICAN COOTS, 4 BROWN CREEPERS, 3
GOLDEN-CR. KINGLETS and 19 WHITE-THR. SPARROWS. In Buffalo,
at Tifft Nature Preserve, a WINTER WREN and 2 SWAMP
SPARROWS, plus WILD TURKEY, 3 RED-BELLIED WDPKRS., AMERICAN
ROBIN and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH. And back on December 3, in a
Riverside backyard, a probable immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was
  feeding on a Rock Dove.

Dial-a-Bird will be updated Thursday evening, December 18.
Please call in your sightings by noon Thursday. You may
report sightings after the tone. Thank you for calling and
  reporting to Dial-a-Bird.
