OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY DECEMBER 8 AT 8 AM
This is Chris Lewis reporting.
Except for the deeper channel and rapid areas, the Ottawa River is
extensively frozen now. Remic Rapids is still hosting a male
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and a Red-breasted Merganser as of December 7
and a Red-necked Grebe and Long-tailed Duck were at Shirley's Bay
on the 4th. Also at Shirley's Bay that day were 4 Bald Eagles, 3
adults and 1 immature and at Andrew Haydon Park there was a first
winter Glaucous Gull.
A Great Blue Heron was in a ditch along March Valley Rd south of
Klondike Rd on the 7th.
The Rideau River is still high and fast behind the tennis club.
The female HARLEQUIN DUCK has not been reported since November 27.
An adult Cooper's Hawk was at Pleasant Park Dr in Alta Vista and a
Northern Goshawk flew over the NCC trail at Corkstown Rd, both on
the 7th.
The local breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons was seen together on
the west side of the Crowne Plaza Hotel on the 1st and one adult
Peregrine was in the Carlington area near the Central Experimental
Farm on the 4th.
Two Great Horned Owls continue to keep each other company in the
southwest corner of the Britannia Conservation Area. A Barred Owl
was at the Jack Pine Trail on the 6th and 6 Short-eared Owls were
most recently reported along Earl Armstrong Rd on the 3rd, 3 were
reported here on the 7th.
The catch of the day on the 7th was a male American THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER on a trail that runs between Kerwin and Riddell Rds
west of Kanata. The male RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER is still visiting
feeders around 6848 McCordick Rd south of North Gower and a Brown
Thrasher was also at one of these feeders until at least December
5.
A lone male American Robin has been at Britannia for several days,
probably surviving on the abundant berries. A Northern Shrike was
also here on the 7th.
A venture out into the Larose Forest east of Limoges on the 7th
produced 2 Northern Shrikes, small numbers of Golden-crowned
Kinglets, good numbers of Evening Grosbeaks and 1 Pine Grosbeaks.
Common Redpolls and Evening Grosbeaks were in the Kerwin Rd area
as well.
Late sparrows include a Vesper Sparrow evading a Merlin on Akins
Rd at Eagleson Rd and 2 Song Sparrows and 2 White-throated
Sparrows at Graham Creek in Andrew Haydon Park, all on the 7th.
Also on Akins Rd, as well as Old Coach Rd off Donald B Munro in
Carp, were large flocks of Snow Buntings and Horned Larks. The
Carp flock contained at least 1 Lapland Longspur.
Good news from farther a field indicated that the male BLACK-
HEADED GROSBEAK is still surviving at the Jurmain's feeder near
Pakenham. Birders must prearrange at visit to this location.
Please contact Bob and Iris Jurmain at 613-256-0160.
The Ottawa-Gatineau Christmas Bird Count is coming up this Sunday
December 14. Happy bird counts to all.
