I was leading a TFN outing on the island to-day and had seen virtually no
landbirds until we spotted this bird on the boardwalk. It was feeding
amongst the rocks on the seaward side, hopped onto the concrete wall, then
along the boardwalk into our shadows, thence on the ground in the shrubby
verge to the north. The bird remained on the ground most of the time
sallying up to 3' on occasion.

Because the bird was so bright, I assumed it was a male lacking a chestnut
cheek. However, my recollection now is that the bird lacked back spotting,
making it a female.

The bird was located along the wooden boardwalk, about 25 metres before the
west end where the trail becomes asphalt and Ward's Island becomes Centre
Island. This is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Ward's Island ferry
terminus.

The Monday to Friday Toronto Island Winter Schedule has ferries departing
the city at 6;35, 7, 7:30, 8, 8:30, 10, 11:30, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, etc.

Good luck. Clearly, the bird's days are numbered.
