I travelled down to Kingston today and saw the Rufous Hummingbird at 9.20am, it was very active, in spite of, or maybe because of, the strong cool westerly winds. The bird fed frequently and Mr. Yendt (homeowner) told me he was improving the mix in the feeder so as to have a greater amount of protein and to be less likely to freeze. The location is # 24 King Pitt Rd, which is off Highway 2 near Kingston, between Joyceville Rd and Hwy 15.(Exit 623) After leaving Kingston I contacted the homeowner (Bob Jurmain) in the Pakenham area, who told me the Black-headed Grosbeak had returned after having not been seen all day yesterday, Saturday. I arranged to visit and arrived just after noon. The bird was very cooperative and visited the feeder outside the family room window several times. Mr Jurmain seems very welcoming of visitors but would like you to phone ahead at (613) 256-0160. Mrs Jurmain is blind and there is not a lot of space in the driveway, so please bear these two things in mind if you go to see this bird. Two very good birds for a cool wintery day in Eastern Ontario. Michael Tate
