Very cold easterly winds and unexpectedly overcast skies meant few migrating hawks--sure enough, after 3 hours put in by a hardy crew of 6 the Cranberry marsh Raptor Watch in southwest Whitby had 1 of each of Cooper's, Red-tailed, Rough-legged, N.Harrier and Kestrel.
We "need" 6 more Red-taileds to go over 2000 for the fall migration period. At 0900 a GREAT EGRET was seen in the marshland on the north side of Victoria St., east of Lynde Shores CA. At 1030 this bird was seen from our viewing platform as he flew south across the east side of the wetland, landing in the south end of L:ynde Marsh near the lakefront. Day by day the numbers of sparrows is dwindling on the path near our platform. Today we had a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET in a nearby tree.
