Twelve birders from the BOS and nine from the GOS enjoyed a pleasant, if
somewhat quiet, birding day along the river. Our most productive gull stop
was at the Sir Adam Beck overlook where we saw 7 species including Thayer’s
(1), Iceland (4) and Lesser Black-backed (1). We missed the California Gull
by ¾ of an hour (seen by Jean Iron and others). Down stream and upstream we
searched unsuccessfully for a Little Gull but added 4 more Lesser
Black-backed Gulls, 1 just above the falls and 3 below the control
structure. Other birds of interest were a light morph Rough-legged Hawk seen
by the O’Donnell’s on the way out of Fort Niagara SP, a Common Loon, several
Long-tailed Ducks and three Dunlin in a fly over flock of Cedar Waxwings at
Old Fort Niagara, a great Blue Heron in the gorge at Sir Adam Beck, the
injured Brant plus a Hooded Merganser, Green-winged Teal and Red-breasted
Nuthatch the just above the falls and a Belted Kingfisher at Nichols Marina
on the way home.

The Rochester Group, lead by Bob Spahn, saw additional species of interest
on the way from Rochester (and probably on the way back too).
