Saturday lunchtime, November 15 Pete Read and I introduced Jean Iron to some of our local birding areas yesterday, and whilst doing so found a few late birds.
Aylmer W.M.A./ "police college"- a SOLITARY SANDPIPER was circling the field just east of the parking area, and a GREAT BLUE HERON flew over. GREEN-WINGED TEAL were on the far bank, seen from the viewing stand. Aylmer S.L. - first pond had shorebirds along the west edge, which included many DUNLIN(50), 2 SNIPE, 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and a couple of PECTORAL SANDPIPERS. Second and third ponds had no shorebirds, but BONAPARTE'S GULLS, and several sp. of ducks were present, including both SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, RUDDY, G.W. TEAL, PINTAIL, BLACK, and GOLDENEYE. As we returned an EASTERN MEADOWLARK flushed from the weeds on the south side of the first pond. NORTHERN HARRIER and KESTREL also were present there. In the 4th pond along with the same duck sp. was a family of TUNDRA SWAN. Best sighting to me was an ORANGE SULPHUR butterfly as we entered , and also crawling around were some WOOLLY BEAR caterpillars.
