Birders, Thursday's forecast for Buffalo is calling for west winds at 30 to 40 mph with higher gusts. Strong winds often move gulls into the Niagara River. Very strong winds that align with the axis of Lake Erie, like those predicted, will push numbers of Bonaparte's Gulls into the river in the vicinity of the Peace Bridge at Buffalo/Fort Erie. At this time of the year, other small gulls may accompany them (Little, Franklin's, Kittiwake, Sabine's, Black-headed, even Ross's). Jaegers and phalaropes are also very possible. Besides the Peace Bridge area, the area below the falls, above the falls, and the power plants are likely to have more small and large gulls than have been seen so far this gull season.
Hopefully, many will stick around until the weekend when there will likely be several birders looking. However, the best chance to see one of the rarer small gulls is likely during the big blow. If you are thinking of coming tomorrow, you should be aware that the forecast also calls for 1-3 inches of snow (not enough to stop a Buffalo birder!) which, hopefully, will be finished by the afternoon.
