Hi Again Everyone,
After Al Wormington left the Erieau CAVE SWALLOWS around 12:00, I returned
with Pete Read and Lance and Faye Allin. The birds could not be found in
any of the 3 previous areas. The sun went behind dark clouds, some light
flurries fell briefly and it got colder. I left for awhile to return later
to the news that when the sun came back out, so did the swallows. Two of
them flew quickly past the fish plant area and were not refound BUT at 3:30,
the 3 searchers were finally rewarded with good looks of a single cave
swallow near the pier, over the channel and finally around the trailer park.
I'm not sure if there were 3 birds in the immediate area but it would appear
possible. I stayed until 4:30 but they did not reappear.
Tonight's forecast calls for clear skies and COLD temperatures. If it is
sunny in the morning, the most likely spot to find these birds would
definitely be at the Erieau Packers Plant on the east side, right beside the
channel. That's where one was roosting early this morning and where 6 of
them flew around for the early morning almost exactly 4 years ago. Check
the window sills carefully. Good Luck!
Other good birds in the area today include: 1 FORSTER'S TERN, 1 im GOSHAWK,
1 probable HUDSONIAN GODWIT, and 1 SANDERLING. Rondeau Bay is LOADED with
ducks, geese and swans. Bring a 'scope.
Erieau is located south of Highway 3 between Blenheim and Cedar Springs in
Kent County, at the end of the Erieau Road. The pier is at the far east end
of the Erieau Road and the sand piles and fish plant are on the left hand
side. The southern pier, the beach, the trailer park and the weedy area can
be found by walking to your right.
