Today Judit Mateos, Brian Moore and I counted 37 Black-backed Woodpeckers (and one Three-toed) in a June 2003 forest fire burn north of Jellicoe, Thunder Bay District. We sampled the burn by walking bush roads in it for about 4 hours.
Directions: On Hwy 11 travel east from Jellicoe or west from Geraldton to Kinghorn Road, go (north) 45 km to the start of the burn. Note: The entire burn will be salvage cut starting tomorrow. we are not sure where the woodpeckers will go when their winter food supply disappears.
