AMHERST I. [page 36, quad E54 & E55]

Bruce Ripley reported on Oct. 28, at the East End K.F.N. Property: "2 BRANT,
3 DUNLIN, 30 SNOW BUNTINGS and 1 PAINTED LADY butterfly. At the Owl Woods:
12 LONG-EARED
OWLS, 1 FOX SPARROW, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a PICKEREL
FROG. Also, 1 NORTHERN SHRIKE and a VESPER SPARROW on the 2nd. Concession
Road
and a flock of 500 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS on the northeast corner of the 3rd.
Concession and the Emerald Road. Raptors are all over the island including
RED-TAILED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN KESTREL and NORTHERN HARRIER.

Paul Mackenzie on Oct. 29 reported: "despite the rain I visited Amherst from
8-10 on KFN property this morning: 7 C. LOON, 12 D.-C. CORMORANT, 6 R.-B.
MERGANSER, 1 C. MERGANSER, 8 C. GOLDENEYE, 5 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 3 N.
PINTAIL, 12 BLACK DUCK, 50 MALLARD, 20 GADWALL, 2 AM. WIGEON, 2 BRANT, 50
CAN. GOOSE, 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 N. HARRIER, 2 GR. YELLOWLEGS, 21 DUNLIN, 1
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, 3 WILSON'S SNIPE, 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER, a
SHORT-EARED OWL flying over the fields, 1 CHIPPING SPARROW, 4 TREE SPARROW,
4 D.-E. JUNCO, 2 SAVANNAH and 1 SONG SPARROW, 25 SNOW BUNTING with 4 LAPLAND
LONGSPUR."

The North Leeds Birders birded the Front Rd. and the 2nd Concession West of
Stella on Oct. 29, Highlights were: over 20 C. LOON, 1 PIED-BILLED GREBE, 12
KILLDEER, one SHORT-EARED OWL, a HORNED LARK, an EASTERN BLUEBIRD, a
NORTHERN SHRIKE, both KINGLET species, and good numbers of HAWKS: 20
RED-TAILED, 12 ROUGH-LEGGED and about 10 N. HARRIER.

DIRECTIONS: The ferry to Amherst I. leaves from a dock at the western side
of Millhaven. It is reached from the 401 by taking exit 593 south to
Millhaven. Jog right about 100 m. On Hwy 33 to the dock. The ferry fare is
$5.00 Cdn return. The earliest ferry leaves @ 6:20 a.m. The next is 7:30
a.m. and thereafter hourly. The KFN property is to the east of Lower Road. A
stile over the fence at the south end of Lower Rd. allows access to the path
along the east lake shore and to the berms containing the ponds. The gravel
bar is farther north.


AMHERSTVIEW SEWAGE LAGOONS [page 36, Quad D54], {page 44, quad N3}

Paul Mackenzie on Oct. 29 reported: "In the Lagoons at Amherstview: 3 SURF
SCOTER, SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, an AM. COOT and hundreds of BONEPARTE'S GULLS."

On Oct. 29, at the Lagoons I saw some of the above plus 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS &
2 COM. GRACKLES.
