Had a decent (except for weather!) day today birding the Lake Huron
shore around Kincardine with the following highlights:
Baie du Dore:
Horned Grebe - 16 (at least)
Greater Black-backed Gull - 1
American Pipit - 1
Kincardine Sewage Lagoons:
Hooded Merganser - 2 pair
Bufflehead - 40
American Goldeneye - 1 (female)
Greater Scaup - 150
Shoveler - 3
Ring-necked Duck - 3 (immatures)
Ruddy Duck - 1 (adult male)
Killdeer - 1
Dunlin - 2
Rusty Blackbird - 4
Pileated Woodpecker - 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 6
Golden-crowned Kinglet - 4
Winter Wren - 3
Brown Creeper - 5
Hermit Thrush - 1
Plowed Field on Concession 10 near Boiler Beach:
Horned Lark - 300
Lapland Longspur - 100
Snow Bunting - 6 (including 1 still in breeding plumage)
Point Farms Provincial Park:
Shrike sp. - 1 (Unfortunately this adult was seen only briefly, and
after an hour of searching could not be relocated. Based on the
relatively short bill, relatively short wings and tail as well as its
rapid direct flight, the bird was probably a Loggerhead.)
Palm Warbler - 1 (eastern race - breeding plumaged bird)
Directions:
Baie du Dore- Take Highway 21. North of Underwood, turn east on Bruce
Concession 8. Proceed almost to end and turn left onto Institute and
keep bearing to left till road dead ends in parking lot.
Kincardine Sewage Lagoons- Take Highway 21 and turn east onto Kin-Huron
Road (south of Kincardine). Go approximately 1.5 km to north
perpendicular gravel road with gate marked "No Motorized Vehicles".
Walk through gate and take first short path on right to lagoon berm.
Concession 10 Field- Take Highway 21 and turn east onto Huron Concession
10 (1 concession north of road to Ripley). Pass communications tower on
right. Most active field was on south side of road east of Baseline
North Sideroad.
Point Farms Provincial Park- Park entrance is on east side of Highway
21 south of Highway 86.
Good birding!
