OFNC BIRD STATUS LINE MONDAY OCTOBER 13 AT 7:30 PM

This is Chris Lewis reporting.

Falls arrivals dominated this past week's bird reports.

Three Horned and 5 Red-necked Grebes were seen on the Ottawa River
from Andrew Hayden Park on the weekend. Small numbers of Snow
Geese continue to move in. Three were at the Greely Sand and
Gravel Pit on the Old Prescott Rd south of Ottawa on the 12th.
Seventeen Brant have been seen feeding on the lawns near the ponds
at Andrew Hayden Park since October 10. Increasing numbers of
diving ducks reported mainly from Andrew Hayden Park since the
11th included 2 Black Scoters, 4 Surf Scoters, increasing numbers
of Common Goldeneye and Bufflehead and a Red-breasted Merganser
was still present between Andrew Hayden and Lakeside Gardens on
the 12th.

Shorebirds have almost completely cleared out. A Sanderling was
on the sandbar at Andrew Hayden Park on the 8th, a couple of
Greater Yellowlegs were at Bruce Pit on Cedarview Rd on the 13th
and 2 late Spotted Sandpipers were spotted at Britannia on the
12th.

A Short-eared Owl was flying over the Ottawa River, seen from
Constance Bay, on the 12th as well.

Most of the songbirds reported were late fall migrants. Golden-
crowned Kinglets have been increasing and Ruby-crowned Kinglets
are decreasing, as expected at this time of year. The first
reports of American Tree Sparrows came from various locations this
weekend and 2 Snow Buntings and a Lapland Longspur were found
along the Ottawa River near Andrew Hayden Park, also on the 12th.

There is still time to register for the OFNC fall bird count this
Saturday October 18 and Sunday October 19. To participate on the
Ontario side, please contact Eve Ticknor at 737-7551 or e-mail
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . For the Québec side, please contact Daniel St
Hilaire at 776-0860.

Happy Thanksgiving. Good birding.
