This morning Mark Jennings and myself found a Northern Wheatear at Moose Factory. The bird was at the south end of the island on the huge lawn of the school there (High School?). We watched the bird for about 20 minutes, got bored, and left it still feeding on the lawn / playground.
Other sightings of interest: Glaucous Gull - juvenile today at Moose Factory. Great Black-backed Gull - juvenile October 9 at Moosonee Dump Franklin's Gull - adult October 8 at Moosonee sewage lagoons (apparently only the second record for southern James Bay -- according to locals, the bird has been present since September 28) Spruce Grouse - (12) counted along the road from Smooth Rock Falls to Fraserdale on October 8. Excellent photo opportunities of both male and female birds. Today it was 24 C. in Moosonee, so it was good for insects too: Milbert's & Compton Tortoise-Shells, Common and Orange Sulphurs, and Mourning Cloak.
